We happened
upon the Drytown Winery one day while roaming through the hills of Amador
County. A sign on the side of road coming into the town of Drytown was
the first clue to the existence
of this winery. At the time, the tasting room was inside a house which is
probably over a 100 years old. They have since built a fabulous new
storage building and tasting room which we recently had the pleasure of
exploring. As luck would have it, I did have the
opportunity to talk to Allen Kreutzer (the
winemaker) who we found very interesting. Apparently, he does a lot
of consultant wine making for various wineries in the area and around
Lodi. He has a vast knowledge of the industry and good insight on
local happenings. When we were there, he had a Chardonnay, Red table
wine, Barbera, and a Zinfandel. Allen's philosophy on Zins is to
make them dry. He feels that most zins in the area are not dry
enough. We tried the zin and bought the zin. We found it to
be very good. In addition, I feel that all of his wines are a good
value. Drytown is open on to the public on Saturday and Sunday from
11-5. We would
certainly recommend stopping in to give them a try.
