Sutter
Ridge is located along Ridge Rd. in the southern portion of Amador
County. I found the tasting room to be clean and the tasting room
staff to be helpful and friendly. Sutter Ridge was pouring 7 wines
and a 'dry sherry fino' when I happened by. Of particular note is
the unusual but pleasant Pinotage which they were pouring. Pinotage
is a grape of South African heritage and is rarely found in the
states. It seems to be a like or dislike variety and personally, I
am not a big fan. I would certainly recommend giving it a
try. Additionally, I enjoyed the Cab Franc as it was very
rich, full of flavor, and true to the style. Sutter Ridge was also
pouring a dry fino sherry which I found surprisingly to my liking.
Most notable with the sherry is the heavy nutty finish. I found
Sutter Ridge to be an excellent value too, with wines ranging from $6.00
for the white zin to $17.50 for the pinotage.
