Boeger is
one of the major wine producers in El Dorado county. Boeger has a
long history of producing high quality, affordable wines. It would
be reasonable to say that Boeger was at the forefront of the modern wine
revolution in El Dorado county. The Boeger's purchased the vineyard
from Elmo Fossati in 1972. Elmo Fossati is the great, great grandson
of Lombardo pictured above in the 1880 photo. The Fossati's operated
the winery and vineyards from the gold rush and on through prohibition.
While many wineries in El Dorado and Amador counties went bankrupt during
prohibition, the fossati's were savvy enough to convince the government
that they were producing wine for religious purposes. The
government's stamp of approval remains to this day on the door of the old
wine making facility (see above photo). What served for many years
as the tasting room is the original gold rush facility which has been in use
for over one century. You can immediately sense the history of the
building once you have entered. The remains of the original grape
chute protrudes
through the ceiling (see photo) and the walls are constructed of local
stone. Back in the day, It could get a little crowded in the old facility on a busy
wine weekend, but the new tasting
room has been tastefully done and is quite a bit more roomy.
The wines at Boeger are always consistently good;
there's not a bad one in the bunch. Of particular note is the Cab
Franc and the hard-to-find Tempranillo. Locals are partial to Boeger's
table wine "Hangtown Red". In addition, it is well worth
the extra cost to taste the reserve wines such as the Petit
Syrah, Barbera, and Meritage. With the cost of the reserve tasting,
you get to go home with a nice souvenir wine glass.
Boeger holds a spot near and dear to our hearts
due to the fact that as children, we often walked through the vineyards and
fished in the pond (which is now drained) on the property. To this
day, that pond was the best fishing hole we have ever cast a hula popper
into.
Take the
Schnell School Exit in Placerville heading East on Highway 50. Turn left
on to Schnell and continue to Carson Road. Turn right and continue for
approximately half a mile and you’ll come to Boeger on the left.
